I bet you have a ton of questions about blogging. There are a lot of preconceived notions about blogging out there, so I’d like to clear some things up.
10 Common Misconceptions About Blogging
1. Blogging is easy – you’re going to want to quit, don’t. Trust me you are going to walk away a ton of times, BUT keep at it… I promise it will pay off in the end.
2. Blogger’s lives are perfect – you’re still human, blogger or not. Bloggers lives are FAR from perfect! Just the areas they are taking photographs or doing lives look that way. We all have an area of the house thats just for taking pictures and no one is allowed to even look in that room … don’t even breath in the direction of that area! It’s not allowed.
3. Each blog post must be perfect – you’ll get better the more you write. Implement new techniques as you learn them and update older content as you can.
4. Good content will find its own audience – content is king but distribution is queen! And without proper SEO no one will find that amazing post you just wrote.
5. More traffic means more money – I know blogs that only get 200 views a day and make WAY more money than some that get 20xs that.
6. Blogging is about being a good writer – it’s more about being relatable. I will tell this to anyone who wants to blog but gives me “I am not a good writer” … that is a limiting belief and it needs to be left at the door! It is not welcomed in here, lol. Read more blogs. See how other bloggers put their content together. See how they are storytelling, how they photograph products, and how they are connecting with you — the reader.
7.Bloggers can please everyone – no you can’t and that’s ok. Don’t even bother trying to please everyone!
8. Other bloggers are competition – Connect with other bloggers! They will be your biggest supporters and will be the first to point you in the right direction when you have questions. Join other groups on Facebook in blogging community to help you grow your blog and grow your blogging knowledge.
9. Sticking to one niche is limiting – niching helps you focus. But you are not limited to just one niche – it’s all about making it flow together. Lifestyle blogs are perfect for multi-niche style. You just need to make sure they can blend well. Example – You can’t have a blog focusing on growing your real estate business and talk about your fitness journey BUT you can have a lifestyle blog where you talk about your life as a real estate agent, parenting, the 5K you are training for, and post a honey garlic recipe you tried the other night for dinner.
10.Investing in your blog before you make money isn’t worth it – if your desire is for your blog to become your business, you’ll invest in its potential and put the work behind it to make sure it succeeds. THAT IS HOW BUSINESS WORKS. I paid $15 on Bluehost hosting to get my business started 8 years ago plus $15 for my domain. That gave me a website, the WordPress, and an official email to match my domain name (making me look more professional, but Gmail is okay too — I still have Gmail address I use for things). This is what set me on my blogging journey. The investment isn’t huge but you must be willing to spend money on it.
Which one of these questions did you have about blogging? Did I help clarify any of them for you?
Here is an additional misconception: Every website is automatically a blog. NOPE. Your domain (www.something.com) is just a space online until you equip it with WordPress which is the software that gives you blogging capabilities. And before you even tap into the blogging side, you need to create the basic template for your website.
